Rosacea, the stealth disease
Rosacea is such a common disease, but nobody really seems to know what it really is. For those that have rosacea, we seem to just blend into society with our "ruddy complexions", too much sun, too much alcohol, high blood pressure, mad, hot, rosy cheeks (how cute!) and a host of many other disguises. But underneath, we are literally boiling!! We hurt, embarrass easily, seek medical help that generally does not help. We flush at a drop of a hat. Stress, foods sunlight, cold, heat, soap, almost anything can make us flush! Sooner or later the flush becomes permanent. Social events and even the work place is harder and harder to cope with. We soon begin to grasp at anything that might help. Prescription meds and creams along with supplements begin to pile up. Some work for a while, but rosacea always seems to win at the end of the day.
Rosacea strikes about 14 million Americans. There is no known cure. Rosacea is almost always progressive, meaning our redness gets worse, disfigurement of the nose and face, fibrosis of the facial skin and papules and pustules form. Broken blood vessels and capillaries appear over the T zone of the face and sometimes the entire face and neck. Neuropathic chronic pain may occur in the face. Depression is very common if not universal. Social isolation and missed opportunities become common place.
So, how do we deal with this very common but virtually publicly unknown disease? The first step is to recognise that we have rosacea. Most doctors would be able to tell if you do, but many have been misdiagnosed with other conditions. Many online help groups such as Rosacea Support Group at Yahoo is a good place to start. RSG has many achives of previous treatments that have been successful or not, and the members will walk you through the disease. The only thing that is discussed is rosacea and the treatment of rosacea. You will be in good hands and company, because everyone in the group has rosacea and is willing to help and offer advice.
Rosacea is hard to treat. The reason being not everyone responds the same way. Not everyone has the same symptoms and medicines and other treatments work for some and not for others. Another point to make is many rosaceans have ocular effects. The eyes become involved with infections, tearing, dryness and redness. Some rare cases of blindness have occurred.
I will talk about the pathology and treatment as we go along in this blog and welcome any comments.

I am really frustrated because my insurance company refuses to cover the laser therapy I need for my rosacea. Three years ago, Accordia PEIA here in WV did cover my treatments. A couple of years ago, they stopped because it was now considered an aesthetic treatment or simply cosmetic. I want to appeal their decision because I know rosacea is a disease that progresses if untreated. I teach school and am very self-conscious of the flushing and broken cappilaries.
Do you have any suggestions on insurance carriers who refuse to cover laser treatments for rosacea?
Dear Dr.Steven;
I'm a one of the 14 millions of the rosecea victims.I had no idea of the desease before nor that I was having it untill a few years ago my caleaques at work kept asking me,why is your face so read?Needless to say that at first I didn't pay much attentions to their questions but over time when the questions kept comming back then it started to annoy me and one day I looked at a mirror and I relized that I do have a read face.As you correctly pointed out in your blog that a men does not do much about a problem even he knows he has one and I didn't.Like you stated in your article rosecea is a progressive disease and it started to get worse.I still didn't know what it was but I stared to pay much attention to it.My daughter was the first one who came with the sugestion that I might be having rosecea so I went to my doctor with the sugestion of having rosecea and he concluded that it was the case.(I wander how come that he didn't see that before on my frequent visit to him? Oh, well)He prescribed me an antibiotic and a ficial cream the family of Metro but my skin could not tolarate the cream it was to irritent and the redness got worse so I stopped to use the cream only the antibiotics I had continued to take. The severity of the discomfort subsided over time and to my relief I thought the worse was over. Not so fast it came bck over and over again simply it was reaccuring so my doctor referred me to a specialist. The dermatologist put me on tetracycline
and an oitment but as before my skin could not tolerate the topical medications so I stopped using it.After a month of beeing on tetracycline on the second visit to the dermatologist he concluded that the antibiotic is not working for me so he switched me to acutaine.I had to sign a pledge form in order to be on that drug but when I read the booklet and saw the many sides effects the drug can cause,so I decided not to take it.At the time I'm writing my comment I'm in a process of a recovery of a worst outburst of a rosecea I've had ever expieriensed in my life time so far.Few days ago my rosecea hit me so hard so at work I had to wear a hat to cover the redness and the swollen pimples on my forhead(did I mentioned that the rosecea effects my forhead the most?)and the itching and burning sensations was so bad that like Dr.Steven briliantly observed that a men in desperate situations is seeking a deperate remedies.I couldin't take it any more so I used isopropil rubbing alcohol on my forhead even I knew it I shouldn't and guess what it got worse and here comes the the best part(the dumbiest thing that some one could ever do and I'm probably the first in this class the champ).I was having at lunch as a drink a ginger ale and something crossed my mind that corbonated bevreges-sodas are having cleasing properties so I thought that my help me to relief the burning effect.Well that desperate remedy made a disasterous consequences. My forhead looked like a water melon cut in a half with the seeds exposed that how the pimples on my forhead were big.I work in a hospital and I was so embarassed to go to ER.to get help. When my shift was finaly over I put my hat deep down my face to cover my monsterous looke face and I ran to my car fast with my head down so I saw only my feet and hoping that I would not bump to sombody along the way. When I got back home I begged my wife to go the the pharmacy to buy the acutaine the dermatologist prescribed to me before hoping that the prescription didn't expired already. This time I didn't care abou the side effects. That day wasn't my lucky day the prescription would have to be renewed and because I was leaving on a trip out of state to see my daughter so my wife bought me tetracycline with the refills available and I'm on it right know among other remadies recommended by specialist over the inernet. When I arrived to my dautghter's house every body backed away from me that how scarry I was.Like I said at the begging of my comments. Right now I'm recooperating from that disaster steel peeling of the flaks from the forhead but I'm much, much more better now ,thanks to my dautgher's help.My comment is long and may be boring but I wanted share my expieriense with those out there who might have the same problem and not knowing what to do with it.I think I'm more aware know of the desease and how to cope with it and I'm reading a lot informations about this from books and over the internet and I found that Dr.Steven website-blog is by far the best one I found so far.It is so informative and at the same time ease to understand and in some way entertaining. After all whom is to trust the most if not the one who is having the same problem. Thanks henry.

Jullian, you are right, I would be careful using Accutane. There are other options now, such as PDT and certain lasers. Thanks, Dr Steve Johnson
Many people feel that their title="acne" href="http://www.skinmed.co.uk" >acne< is overly
embarrassing and
unmanageable. I have read story after story of heartache, especially
from teens that endure heartless bullying from schoolmates. There are
so many different remedies and medications. What most people fail to
realise is that each individual has a different biological makeup and
what works for one person may not work for everyone. In some cases
certain acne treatment can adversely affect already irritated skin.
This further causes unnecessary embarrassment and frustration to an
already uncomfortable situation.
Propaganda fuels misconceptions about different so-called remedies and
even causes. The idea that chocolate and oily food causes acne. When in
truth, makeup, unhealthy skin and even perspiration can cause acne.
All of these factors affect the skin. But even your skin makeup can
affect your skin and create back acne, scalp acne, large assesses or
ingrown hair. There is an acne questionnaire done by a company called
Skinmed that will help to diagnose acne problems through a series of
questions, and then it n recommends the best acne treatment for each
individual.
Teen acne is typically the most difficult to diagnose because of
hormonal considerations, but there is a special area meant just for
teen acne that has a completely different set of rules when running the
formula that determines the best medications or treatments. In some
cases simple changes in hygiene and daily washing is all that it takes.
The site also has a title "free acne/rosacea cream" title="acne"
href="http://www.skinmed.co.uk" >free acne treatment/a that is made up
of a three step process. The primary reason most teens, especially boys
tend to have more problems with chronic acne is because of a lack of
simply washing their face regularly. So this treatment is free is a way
to create a healthy daily routine, while gently healing the skin to
prevent acne scarring brought on as a result of squeezing the sores.
Once daily cleaning is practices, and hormonal issues are taken into
consideration, a proper treatment regiment can be highly affective.
At the end of the day most acne, even teen acne , can be eliminated
quickly and permanently with the right motivation. After all, we all
want to be beautiful don’t we?

Dear Dr.Steven,
I have suffered with Rosacea for seven years. The only way i can try to keep it under control is to drink three leters of water a day, cook everything from fresh, moisturise my skin well at night and try and relax which is very hard for me because i have Eppilepsy. I have been taking Lymecycline for the last seven years now and my skin is still sensitive. When i try to get help from my GP all i get is " your face looks fine to me", Thankyou for this website you have answered questions i have been asking for year`s.
There are specific medicines to cure your anxiety if you are suffering from it and Xanax is one of the prominent anti-anxiety medicines available in the market. Similarly, to deal with erectile dysfunction, you can hold of viagra; Paxil and Marplan are medicines to treat depression and moreover comprehensive details on all these medicines can be accessed just by logging into http://www.pill-care.com.
I am 19 and I have rosacea. I am using Metro Gel, I put it at night. Is that good, to wear it at night or should I wear it in the mornings? How often can I apply it in a day?
Is it normal for a 19 year old to have rosacea, because I have been searching and it says that it usually appears in older poeple?
I have found through the years of fighting with rosacea that after using chemical products or antibiotics for a while, they would fail to control my rosacea.
So, trying different natural creams i have found Redness control cream made by Ovante - http://skinimprovements.com and it took abot 3 weeks to clear my rosacea.
I also suffered from rosacea over many years of untreating it.It made me depressed and so unconscious about myself.I was always flushing when ever i spoke to someone and my skin looked terrible. Finally i went to the doctors and she told me to try a over the counter cream call "Finacea" twice a day.And what a difference this cream has made to my face and it is even controlling the flushing.I would suggest anyone that has this horrible skin condition,to try "Finacea"as soon as possible!
Hi,
I want to share A Brief Guide on Severe forms of Acne
Hi, I'm only 13 and I have rosacea. Almost everything that you said happens to me. Everybody makes fun of me. I'm tired of it! When I play sports, my face gets beat red and it burns. It makes me not want to be around anybody. It affects my life alot. My face turns red from embarrasment, heat, and for no reason.
I have light skin, so came pretty close to skin cancer because I was in the sun alot when I was little. I started noticing it when I was 11. Is there any treatment that will work for me at my age?
-Matt
Thanks for the useful information…I found a few natural skin care treatments for acne, eczema, rosacea etc. I think this may be useful for you also….
Hey, this site has helped me understand a lot. well, today at work i noticed, my cheeks look irritated and my pores look big.
My face easily flushes if i laugh, talk to a stranger, or there's people focusing on me.
I'v enoticed because of my frequent flushing my face has gotten more irritated. i Also live in New York and tan in the summer, when winter comes, the change from the cold air outside and the hot air in the subway makes my face feel irritated. I just wish to have normal white skin without that little bit of irritation. i will definately try "Finacea" and see how that works.
Hello all, thanks for the advice, I'm glad I wasn't the only person who had this stink disability. I used to be popular but now my face goes red whenever I socialize with mates, teachers, strangers etc! It's really embarrassing which makes me go more red, I feel no one understands and I'm getting depressed. It's a huge disability in my life and hope it goes someday soon.
You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
Natural skin products can effectively be used to treat rosacea symptoms without any patient harm or any side effect. In Riversol Skin Care products they are using natural herbs for patient safety.
Thanks for the post. It was very interesting and meaningful.
